Our ask is simple. In order to promote values of transparency and democracy within our school, providing students from each of NYU’s 16 colleges (including Abu Dhabi and Shanghai campuses) with voting membership on the Board of Trustees is imperative.
Just as students deserve votes on the Board, we must ensure that the student body has a vote in choosing such representatives. Students handpicked by Board members to serve would stand to completely undermine any type of progress we hope to achieve with this new representation. We’re already well aware that the Board is out of touch with the student body, so why would they be in charge of determining who would best represent our voices at Board meetings? It is vital that direct student elections are put in place to determine which students will assume positions on the Board.
This idea is not new. The incorporation of student representation into administrative stuctures is common among campuses across the country. We believe that the NYU student body deserves the same opportunities to incorporate our unique thoughts and perspectives into our school’s foundation, and to prove that we’re not just checks to the Bursar’s office.
In short, the importance of our campaign comes down to four words: our school, our vote.
We’re paying $71,000 to go here. We not only have a right to know what our money is being put towards, we deserve to have a say in what decisions are being made with it.
